Dear Supporter,
Detroit’s public schools face serious challenges that require collaborative and creative solutions.
As teachers, paraprofessionals and clerical employees we have committed our lives to these schools, the children we educate, and the neighborhoods of Detroit in which we live. Our jobs don’t end in the classroom, in the hallway, or even outside school grounds. We are invested in our communities and have a huge stake in the success and growth of our city.
Because working in public schools is our life, and Detroit is our home, we have formed A Stronger Detroit for Our Kids. This joint venture of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, Detroit Federation of Paraprofessionals, and the Detroit Association of Educational Office Employees, is our campaign to take action towards positive change. We are dedicated to making Detroit public schools all that they can be.
This summer, A Stronger Detroit for Our Kids is sponsoring a literacy camp, staffed entirely by volunteers from our membership of certified teachers, classroom paraprofessionals, and administrative professionals. This free academic camp, available to DPS students in the 4th through 7th grade, will help Detroit kids prepare for the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) test in September.
We understand the needs of students, parents and our community. We are taking steps to ensure that our kids succeed, our schools thrive, and parents get the assistance they need to help their children reach their full potential.
In unity,
Keith Johnson
President, Detroit Federation of Teachers
Donna Jackson
President, Detroit Federation of Paraprofessionals
