Working with you to improve our schools.

AFT Detroit continues to listen to what Detroiters have to say about improving their schools. We are hearing many great ideas.

The overwhelming response from parents and community leaders was that all Detroit students deserve:

  • Safe, clean, attractive, and welcoming schools that are ready to receive our kids. This includes cut grass, clean entrance and exit doorways, soap and tissue in bathrooms.
  • Certified teachers in every classroom, teaching in their subject areas, and adequate support staff. Students should have schedules assigned at the beginning of school that are aligned with graduation needs. Parents should be informed of their children’s schedules and the requirements for their classes.
  • Classrooms equipped with basic resources, starting with books. Resources essential for instruction should be present in every classroom.
  • Safe transportation. Bus schedules should be set and parents should be notified of these schedules. Students should not wait for buses that never come. Students with special needs should have adequate transportation to school.
